A Working Tool Handover That Prevents Compatibility Mistakes

Hand over the actual clipper, blade family, attachment and condition checks so the next groomer can verify the setup.

Experienced groomer explaining a VUNRO D-Series clipper and matching spare D-Series blade to a junior colleague

“Use the five” may sound clear to two groomers who work with the same kit every day. At a mixed station, it leaves important questions unanswered: which blade family, which clipper, which width, and whether an attachment is part of the setup.

A useful handover identifies the real equipment and the intended task. It gives the next person enough information to check the combination rather than relying on a number or a familiar colour.

Begin with the task and the actual tool

Explain what has been done, what remains, and any area needing particular care. Keep the grooming plan and the dog’s current response separate from the equipment list. The same compatible assembly may still be unsuitable for an area that cannot be worked safely.

Switch the clipper off before showing or changing an attachment, keep it away from the dog and follow its instructions. Identify its model from the actual device or reliable manufacturer information. If the identity is uncertain, resolve that before fitting a blade.

Name the family before the number

VUNRO’s standard A5, D-Series and FlexFit PRO blades are separate families. A shared designation such as 5F does not make their mounting systems interchangeable. A printed length describes another feature; it does not prove that a blade will fit.

Equipment group What the handover must identify
Standard A5 The actual A5-compatible clipper, the standard-width A5 blade, its exact designation and any approved attachment.
D-Series The VUNRO D-Series clipper and matching D-Series blade. Do not substitute an A5 or FlexFit PRO blade.
FlexFit PRO The compatible VUNRO PRO trimmer and the exact FlexFit PRO blade. This is a separate system from D-Series and A5.
Wide A5 The confirmed wide-blade combination and its own matching attachments. Do not assume a standard-width guard will fit.

Keep blade families separated in storage with clear labels and their instructions accessible. Colour and approximate appearance can help locate an item; they cannot establish compatibility.

State the base blade and guard separately

The VUNRO Eight Piece Universal Guard Comb Set is specified for compatible standard-width A5 and D-Series #10, #15 and #30 base blades. That shared guard compatibility does not make the underlying A5 and D-Series blades interchangeable.

Record both parts of an assembly. “The 13 mm Universal guard on the compatible D-Series #10 base” is more useful than “the purple one.” Confirm the exact product instructions and inspect the actual fit; do not extend “Universal” to every wide blade or trimmer.

Pass on condition, not just identity

Tell the next groomer about any observed issue: an attachment that did not seat normally, a damaged component, abnormal performance, or equipment taken out of use. Do not put a doubtful tool back in the usable tray with an informal promise to watch it.

Follow the relevant cleaning, disinfection, maintenance and storage instructions. “Wiped down” is not a substitute for the required process. Keep serviced or inspected equipment distinguishable from equipment still awaiting attention.

For scissors, include the exact pair and its intended role. A tension concern or damaged edge belongs in the handover; it should not be concealed by asking the next person to adjust the screw until the cut feels acceptable.

Use a short repeat-back

Ask your colleague to name the combination and the remaining task in their own words. For example: “D-Series clipper, D-Series blade, the specified guard after checking its fit; body work is finished and the left-leg transition still needs assessment.”

If the explanation reveals a mismatch, stop and correct it while the equipment is off and away from the dog. A repeat-back is a practical team habit, not proof that the tool is safe without inspection.

Keep a simple station record

  • Dog’s agreed grooming plan and any relevant handling observations.
  • Clipper model and blade family, exact designation and width.
  • Base blade and attachment, when used.
  • Checks completed, issues found and equipment removed from use.
  • Work remaining and the person taking over.

Keep customer details in the salon’s proper private record. A public tutorial or shared photograph does not need them. When a combination remains uncertain, send VUNRO the exact model and blade reference for confirmation before use.

Sources and scope

The Skills England dog groomer standard includes sharing technical knowledge and maintaining equipment records. The repeat-back example is a suggested teaching routine, not a measured error-reduction claim. Product compatibility is specific to the identified VUNRO families; follow the current instructions for every exact model and attachment.
