A Scissor Test That Separates Technique from Tool Trouble

When scissors push or fold hair, the temptation is to tighten the screw and try again. That can change the symptom without answering the useful question: is the problem in the scissors, the way the section is presented, or the way the hand is loading the tool?
A short comparison away from the dog gives you a better starting point. Use only clean, non-abrasive practice material approved for your scissors. Do not test grooming edges on paper, wire, nails or an unfamiliar synthetic fibre just because it is nearby.
Start with a tool that is safe to test
Clean and maintain the scissors according to their instructions, then inspect them in good light. Visible damage, an unusual catch, a bent tip or a new problem after a drop needs assessment before further use. Keep fingers away from the cutting edges. A suspect tool does not earn a return to the dog because it manages one acceptable cut.
Check the model's adjustment instructions rather than borrowing a tension rule from a different pair. Pivot designs and scissor geometry vary. There is no universal number of turns or drop-test position that we can responsibly prescribe for every scissor.
Give the comparison a fair starting point
Set up several similar small sections of the same approved practice material. Keep their preparation, support and presentation alike. Use a stable practice stand so that your other hand does not become a moving target beside the blades.
Make a normal controlled closure through one section, within your training. Observe what happens: does the material cut cleanly, move ahead of the edge, fold between the blades, or only catch near a particular part? Record the location rather than reporting that the whole pair is “blunt”.
Ask your tutor or another competent groomer to make a comparable cut with the same pair. If the result changes, investigate grip, side loading and presentation together. That difference is useful information; it does not prove that the tool is fault-free or that the first groomer is the sole cause.
Do not change three things at once
If you adjust tension, reduce section size and change your hand position simultaneously, a better cut cannot tell you which change mattered. Where the scissors are safe and the manufacturer permits adjustment, make one documented change before comparing a fresh section.
There is a limit to this method. NIST explains that changing one factor at a time can miss interactions: the effect of one setting may depend on another. Here, treat a simple comparison as troubleshooting—not proof of the best possible setup. Read NIST's explanation.
Write a service note that somebody can use
A good note might say: “Clean, dry approved practice fibre; folding repeatedly near the tips; same result with a second trained user; began after the tool was dropped.” That gives a service professional something concrete to inspect. “Needs sharpening” assumes the diagnosis before the inspection.
Include the model, when the symptom appeared and any maintenance or incident immediately beforehand. Keep the scissors out of service if safe performance remains uncertain. Do not start bending, grinding or altering their alignment to make them pass your test.
Build a useful pair of working options
